The annual community Yom HaShoah commemoration will be held at the Jewish Community Center, 851 N. Maitland Avenue, on Sunday, May 1 at 4:00 PM.
Sponsored by the Holocaust Memorial Resource and Education Center, it will feature a keynote address by writer Jane Yolen, author of many popular children’s books including two novels, The Devil’s Arithmetic and Briar Rose set in the Holocaust.
The program will focus on the need to preserve the legacy of those who witnessed the terror of the Holocaust firsthand. During this annual commemoration, the Center sponsors a Yom HaShoah Student Creative Arts Contest which this year focused on the theme of Why We Must Remember.
The Yom HaShoah program will feature an awards presentation to student winners of the contest, proclamation readings by local dignitaries, performances by local musicians, candle lighting, and a responsive reading and prayer by local clergy
The general public is invited to attend, and admission is free. For more information, call the Holocaust Memorial Center at 407-628-0555
