Report: OCSO Tech Flop in Cop Shooting Response

Slain Deputy First Class Brandon Coates

It’s three months to the day since Deputy First Class Brandon Coates was gunned down by a thug in one of Central Florida’s most dangerous neighborhoods and much went wrong in terms of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office response at the time of the shooting.

Although millions of dollars have been spent on radios and computer technology, no one at the Orange County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) — except members of a small, tactical anti-crime squad — knew where Coates was or what he was doing that night. He was communicating on a restricted, tactical channel, rather than the “primary” radio channels most deputies use, the Orlando Sentinel reports.

Since Deputy First Class Coates’ shooting, an internal review has been undertaken by the Sheriff’s Office and today, Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings will make the “After Action Report” available to the public.

Coates was shot in the head on December 8, moments after he pulled over a truck driven by accused gunman, Brandon Lyals.
