Dr. Phillips Student Honored as STEM Scholar

Andrew Popp

Dr. Phillips High School junior Andrew Popp is a successful student with a very bright future who is now being honored as a Sunshine State Scholar.

On Friday, Andrew will meet with representatives from 25 Florida public colleges and universities for a unique recruitment event. Andrew will explore opportunities that could await him in a Florida postsecondary institution. He was chosen for this great honor because he is one of Central Florida’s highest achieving science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) students.

The event which started as a simple science and math competition in 1997 has evolved into a program designed to recognize Florida’s top high school STEM students, and recruit them to pursue their post secondary education in Florida.

The state Department of Education hopes this opportunity will increase the likelihood that the students will join Florida’s future workforce. Each school district selects and names one 11th-grade scholar based on established criteria.
