It’s Not Your Mother’s Tea with Selwa “Lucky” Roosevelt
As the longest-serving Chief of Protocol of the United States (1982-89), Ambassador Roosevelt organized 1,000 visits of world leaders, ran the office of record for 30,000 diplomats in the United States, and was responsible for the Blair House Restoration Project – a six-year, 14-million dollar renovation of the 110-room Presidential guest house. She was married to the late Archibald B. Roosevelt Jr., a grandson of President Theodore Roosevelt. 5:30-6:30 p.m. reception; 6:30-7:30 p.m. presentation. Members $10; non-members $25. Brown Bag Lunch & Learn – Crossing the Creek: The Literary Friendship of Zora Neale Hurston and Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings

A 1942 meeting in St. Augustine sparked a long and complex interracial friendship between Hurston and Rawlings who were both at the height of their literary careers. Associate Professor of English at UCF, Dr. Anna Lillios, examines how their relationship developed against the backdrop of segregation and became one of the 20th century’s most intriguing literary friendships. Dr. Lillios is the author of the book, Crossing the Creek: The Literary Friendship of Zora Neale Hurston and Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. She is also the executive director of the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Society and director the Zora Neale Hurston Electronic Archive. Noon-1 p.m. Free. Space is limited. Two centuries of stories and customs are preserved in The Working White House: 200 Years of Tradition and Memories, an exhibition developed by the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage and the White House Historical Association. Hear fascinating eyewitness accounts of White House work culture in an audio tour and exhibition video featuring interviews with past workers. View souvenirs, housekeeping implements, clothing, letters, menus, photographs, and other objects that help illustrate the full story of the presidential residence from the presidencies of William Taft through Barack Obama. Artists & Authors Series: All the Presidents’ Pastries with Chef Roland Mesnier

Enjoy dinner as Roland Mesnier shares stories from his 26-year tenure as White House pastry chef. Working for the administrations of Jimmy Carter through George W. Bush, Chef Mesnier created countless perfect desserts for the First Families and their distinguished guests.
