Citizenship Day, free legal assistance for low income people

On Saturday, April 18, 2009, the Orange County Legal Aid Society & the Central Florida Chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association are hosting Citizenship Day.  This event is being hosted at two locations in Orange County:

Barry University School of Law,  5441 East Colonial Drive, Orlando, FL 32807 and,

Hope Community Center, 1016 N. Park Avenue, Apopka, Florida 32712

Time: 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Immigration lawyers will be on hand to provide free legal assistance to low-income individuals intending to apply for citizenship.  Every case will be reviewed by an attorney and appointments can be scheduled by calling (407) 841-8310 ext 3124.

Anyone interested in applying for citizenship must be eligible. In order to be eligible you must be at least 18 years old on the date you file; have been a lawful permanent resident for at least the last 5 years (3 if married to a U.S. Citizen), have been present in the U.S. for 2½ of the past 5 years (1½ of the past 3 if married to a U.S. Citizen) and have not been outside the U.S. for 1 year or more within the last 5 years (3 years if married to a U.S. Citizen).

Applicants will also need to be able to speak, read and write ordinary English and will have to pass a U.S. History and government test.  Those applying for citizenship will also need to show they are persons of good moral character and will have to taken an oath of loyalty to the U.S.

Applicants will also need to bring all necessary documents including: Green card; list of residential addresses for the past 5 years, including dates lived at each residence; list of employers for the past 5 years, including dates of employment by each employer, dates of travel outside the U.S.;  list of countries traveled to.

The filing fee is $675 per applicant.  If an applicant is unable to afford the filing fee a waiver can be requested but must be supported by documents including, month/weekly earning statement for wages or other including i.e. SSID, etc., and a copy of monthly expenses i.e. rent, mortgage, medical expenses, utilities, and other recurring monthly expenses.

The event is free and open to all applicants who meet the income guidelines.
