FL Reviews Permit Process After Tucson Shooting

Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam said that after the mass shooting last week-end in Tucson, Arizona, he asked for a “top to bottom review” of the process by which concealed weapons permits are granted in Florida “just to make sure people who are ineligible for a permit aren’t getting one.”

Putnam’s agency is responsible for gun permits in Florida.

In the last couple of years there was an increase in applications for gun permits that Putnam said has leveled off.

“The demand remains heavy but it has leveled off from the peak,” in late 2008, he said.

There’s a three to six week wait for permits applied for by mail, so it’s early to tell if there’s been any increase since the shooting in Arizona Saturday that killed six people, including a 9-year-old girl and wounded Putnam’s former colleague in Congress Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and 17 others.
