Police: Driver “Critical” After Frostproof Crash

FHP is investigating the crash of a pick up truck that struck a car in Frostproof, Polk County early on Wednesday morning.  The driver of the car, who suffered head trauma, was airlifted to LRMC in critical condition.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said a 2007 Chevy pick-up truck driven by Christopher L. Updike, 32 years, of Rainbow Drive in Babson Park, was heading northbound on U.S. 27 in Frostproof, approaching the intersection with Avon Park Cutoff Road when it struck the passenger side of a 1979 Chevy Monte Carlo, driven by Jackie Roberts, Jr., 35 year, of Fort Meade.  Mead was heading eastbound on Avon Park Cutoff Road, crossing through U.S. 27 to Scenic Highway.

Preliminary investigation seems to indicate that the pick-up truck ran the red light.

Updike, the driver of the pick-truck was not injured.

Mr. Jackie Roberts, Jr., the driver of the car suffered head trauma and was airlifted to LRMC, where he remains in critical condition in the Trauma Intensive Care Unit.

Deputies say both drivers were wearing seat-belts, and both were the only occupants of their vehicle.

The investigation is ongoing and charges are pending.
