Orlando City Council approved on Monday, $1.5 million to refurbish the Lake Eola Fountain downtown Orlando.
The historic fountain was severely damaged after bad weather knocked out its lights and other mechanical parts in August 2009. The fountain was temporarily restored and in May last year, water flowed once again from the iconic fountain.
Now, the City has approved $1.5 million for full restoration of the landmark, to include some enhancements.
Initially, a state-of-the art system of lights and water jets was contemplated at a cost of $2.3 million, but was later scrapped in view of the City’s fiscal constraints.
A spokesperson for the City said that construction will commence in February and be completed by June in time for the 4th of July Fireworks at the Fountain event.
