Final Orange County Magic Gym Opens in Winter Garden

Today, the fifth and last Orange County Orlando Magic Recreation Center in Winter Garden will be dedicated, with minority-owned companies in Central Florida having been awarded $5 million in contracts for work overall, on the five community gyms.

“The Orlando Magic recognizes the importance and long-term benefits of utilizing local minority and women business enterprises,” said Orlando Magic President Alex Martins. “From the outset of the community venues process we, along with our construction partners, have worked diligently to provide opportunities for local citizens and businesses.”

Nearly 30 percent of the work on the community gyms went to local minority and women business enterprises. This includes 48 subcontracts awarded to minority and women-owned businesses. A total of 12 African-American, 12 Hispanic-American, 10 Asian-American and 14 women-owned companies earned contracts. The Orange County Orlando Magic Recreation Centers include a 25,300 square foot building at each of the five locations.

The community gyms were donated and built by the DeVos family and Orlando Magic.  Champions of the Community partners Disney Parks, GEICO, PepsiCo, AirTran Airways, Florida Hospital and Harris Corporation supported the project.  Orange County operates and maintains the centers.

Within each community recreation center is a gymnasium, cardio and weight rooms, a game room, and a divisible multi-purpose room which can be utilized for meetings, social functions or small group classes. The facilities also include locker rooms, concession areas and office space for the operations staff.

The entry/lobby area is a vibrant space with an eye-pleasing assortment of colors and textures and serves as the spine which links all other adjacent spaces. This space contains prominent placement of logos for the facility sponsors, artwork custom designed by local and regional artists to reflect the dynamic facility and the surrounding neighborhood of each, and flat screen televisions which can be used for entertainment, education or advertisement.

The gymnasium is the primary function space for each facility and can be utilized for both half and full court basketball as well as volleyball.

The Orange County Orlando Magic Recreation Centers are a design-build effort between Orlando Magic partners Turner Construction Company, SC Advisors and SchenkelShultz Architecture.
