FHP is investigating a car crash on I-95 near State Road 5 in Volusia County, which left the driver of a Ford Focus dead at the scene early on Friday morning.
Troopers said that a 2006 Ford Focus, driven by Frederick R. Gleissner, 24 of Palm Coast, was traveling northbound on I-95 in the right lane around 5:38 am on Friday. A 2007 Volvo truck, driven by James A. Williams, 52, of Jacksonville was heading northbound in the center lane on I-95, while a 2006 Dodge pick-up truck, driven by Joseph H. Cromwell, 71 of Ormond Beach, was in the left lane, also going northbound.
Troopers said that, Gleissner abruptly changed lanes from the right to center lane and stuck the Williams’ Volvo truck on the right front with his left front, causing Williams to merge over to the inside emergency lane. For unknown reasons, Gleissner’s car came to a stop in the center lane, as Cromwell, in his Dodge pick-up changed from the left lane to the center lane to give Williams room to move.
Cromwell’s pick-up struck Gleissner’s car in the rear and both vehicles came to a final rest in the center lane facing northbound. William’s truck came to a stop in the inside emergency lane, also facing in a northerly directly.
Troopers said that Gleissner died on the spot. Cromwell suffered minor injuries, while Williams sustained no injuries as a result of the crash.
It is not clear whether alcohol played a role in the crash as toxicology results are pending.
No charges are pending.
