Jingle Bell Run/Walk for Arthritis

On Saturday December 18, the Arthritis Foundation’s Jingle Bell Run/Walk will once again jingle its way through Baldwin Park and once again, the runners with the pink t-shirts and Santa hats will be back in force.

That would be the members of the Sisterhood of Greatness Project, which is designed to bring the family together for fitness and fun. Members and their families can train for the 3.1 mile walk or run around Lake Baldwin. Training activities include walking, running, yoga, cross-training, and interactive Fit-Play.

The event is set for Saturday, December 18 and training kicks off on Saturday, October 23 and continues every week for the eight weeks prior to the run/walk. Project members will meet each Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. at Blue Jacket Park. The Sisterhood of Greatness Project was created a couple of years ago by Carie McKenzie-Dobson, Because of her experiences with training and competing in triathlons.

“There was a sense of community (at the triathlons),” said Carie. Even though participants were competing against each other, they were cheering each other on, she said, “That became the vision I had for Sisterhood.”

In the two years previous, besides other projects, the Sisterhood of Greatness has provided “couch to 5k” training for the Jingle Bell Run/Walk, and has raised more than $1,000 for the event, through registrations for the races and by passing their pink Santa hats on the day of the event. Carie wishes the group could do more monetarily, but says she knows their in-kind contribution counts.

“We might not be bringing in a ton of money, but we are bringing more awareness,” said Carie. For Carie, it’s not just about raising awareness of arthritis; it’s about bringing people together.

“Maybe you don’t know anybody that has arthritis right now, but it is beyond that,” she said. “It’s not just for (the Arthritis Foundation). It’s about getting together with families in your neighborhood!”

The registration fee is $50 per family, and all precedes from this project goes directly to the Arthritis Foundation, so your registration fee is tax-deductible! Please note, only 10 families can be accepted for the training project.
