Five Orange County Schools Win Governor’s Fitness Award

Governor Charlie Crist announced five Orange County schools as 2010 winners of the Governor’s Fitness Challenge. The challenge is an eight-week school-based program to help boost children’s participation in physical fitness activities.

Only 16 schools in the state were selected to receive $1,000 to purchase sports or fitness equipment. Activities for the Fitness Challenge were developed in conjunction with grants from BlueCross and BlueShield of Florida and Keiser University to provide the funding for the winning schools to purchase sports or fitness equipment.

Winners of the 2010 Governor’s Fitness Challenge are:

  • Lake Sybelia Elementary
  • Hillcrest Elementary
  • Bay Meadows Elementary
  • West Creek Elementary
  • Hope Charter School

The Governor’s Fitness Challenge aims to reach as many children as possible. The main activities and exercises of the eight-week challenge can be modified but are not meant to replace any existing fitness programs. The intent of the program is to provide an additional opportunity for students to develop healthy living habits.
