Lakeview Middle Sixth-Grader Wins 4-Year Scholarship

Andrew Gueits, a Lakeview Middle School sixth-grader, is one of only three students statewide who won the Hispanic Heritage Month essay contest. The contest asked students to interview and describe a Hispanic-American whom they believe has devoted his or her life to the service of others. Students also had to share how the person’s life strengthened his or her community and Florida as a state.

Gov. Charlie Crist (l), Andrew Gueits (m) and Christyne Hamilton (r)

In his essay titled “Learning through Ensenanza”, Andrew wrote about Tomasa Zayas, his bilingual kindergarten teacher at Wyndham Lakes Elementary School. Andrew and his family traveled to Tallahassee to accept his award from Governor Charlie Crist and Christyne Hamilton with the Florida Prepaid College Foundation.

Andrew, as winner of the Hispanic Heritage Month essay contest, earns a four-year college or university scholarship.
