Winter Park Man Dies in Early Morning Crash

Troopers are investigating an early morning crash on State Road 520 which left an elderly Winter Park man dead.

According to Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), a 2005 Nissan Altima, driven by George A. Melim, 84, of Winter Park, was traveling in the right lane, north on State Road 520 near Maxim Parkway around 6:29 am, on Thursday.

An independent witness told troopers that he was also traveling north on SR 520 behind the Nissan Altima.  The witness said he passed Melim, changing lanes from the right to the left lane and continued to travel north on SR 520 in the left lane.  The witness stated that the Nissan Altima accelerated past him making a sharp right turn onto the grass shoulder then into the embankment.  The Nissan Altima vaulted into the air, through a barb wire fence, overturned several times while traveling into a north-easterly direction to a final resting place.

Troopers said that Maxim was ejected from the Altima and died on the spot.

FHP said that the crash may have been the result of a medical condition of Melim’s.  He was not wearing a seat-belt.

The investigation is continuing into the crash.
