Killed on the Way Home from Funeral

Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) troopers continue to investigate a three-car crash on Thursday, that killed an 18-year-old Winter Park woman, as she was returning home from a friend’s funeral.

Morgan Crofton, 18, of Winter Park, died when the vehicle in which she was traveling as a passenger was struck by a Chevy pick up on State Road 436, half-a-mile south of Aloma Avenue.  Crofton, a student of Florida Gulf Coast University, was returning from a funeral around 3:30 pm on Thursday.  She died on the spot.

According to FHP, Crofton was traveling in a 2001 Hyundai driven by Amanda McCaffee, 18, of Winter Park, southbound on State Road 436. A Chevrolet pickup, which was being driven by Anthony Robinson, 54, of Casselberry was going northbound when it crossed over into the southbound lanes, for some unknown reason.

The front of Robinson’s vehicle struck the left side of the Hyundai, before crashing into the front of another vehicle, a Nissan Ultima, driven by Crotez Smith, 76, of Orlando.  Smith was also traveling southbound on SR 436.

There were three other passengers traveling with McCaffee in the Hyundai, along with Crofton.  They were: Lauren Tipton, 18, Julie Rivkees, 16, and Shelby Atkins, 18 years, all from Orlando.

Robinson was taken to the Orlando Regional Medical Center and is in critical condition.  It is not clear whether a medical condition caused him to leave his lane.

Tipton, Atkins,  McCaffee and Rivkees were also taken to ORMC with minor injuries.  Smith sustained serious injuries.

Troopers said that alcohol did not play a role in the accident.

Tipton, Crofton, Atkins and Rivkees were not wearing seatbelts.

The Orlando Sentinel is reporting that Crofton was the niece of Walt Disney World Resort president, Meg Crofton.

The crash remains under investigation.
