OCPS Seniors Score Big Gains on SAT

The SAT results for the 2009-2010 school year show seniors in Orange County Public Schools reported increases in all three areas of the test which includes critical reading, mathematics, and writing. The scores jumped higher than those of students in the state and nationwide. OCPS student scores rose 10 points in the critical reading section and seven points in math.

In Florida, scores decreased one point in the critical reading section and stayed the same in math. Nationwide, critical reading scores stayed the same as last year and in math, scores rose one point.  Mean SAT scores for OCPS, Florida, and the nation for 2009-2010 and the past three years are shown in the table below:

The writing test consists of multiple choice questions in grammar and usage as well as a student-written essay. The writing scores rose seven points in OCPS while students in Florida and the nation dropped by one point from last year to this year.  The scores for OCPS, Florida, and the nation are shown in the table below:

In 2009-10, 5,510 students took the test in Orange County, an increase of 424 students from the previous year. The percent of students taking the test increased five percentage points from 50 percent last year to 55 percent this year.
