Republican U.S. Senate candidate Marco Rubio will not be attending Sunday’s planned debate on NBC’s “Meet The Press” because his father is sick, his campaign announced Friday.
Rubio, who had been scheduled to debate Democrat Kendrick Meek, will instead spend the weekend with his 83-year-old father, whose health has “significantly deteriorated in the last 48 hours,” his campaign said. “As a result, Marco plans to stay with his father and family during this time, and will be unable to participate in this Sunday’s debate on Meet The Press,” he said.
“Mario Rubio is 83 years old and suffers from emphysema and lung cancer. We have informed both NBC and Kendrick Meek’s campaign about our need to reschedule this debate, and appreciate their understanding and kind words for the Rubio family during this difficult period.”
Independent candidate Gov. Charlie Crist had planned to skip the debate for Labor Day weekend campaign events.
