Deputy Involved in Fatal Crash was Going Twice the Speed Limit

The Orange County Sheriff’s deputy who was involved in a crash that claimed the life of an elderly man was traveling at twice the posted speed limit and without lights or sirens, the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), investigating the crash said.

Deputy Malinda Miller was traveling around 80 mph in a 40 mph zone on Magnolia Homes Road near Altamonte Springs one week ago, on August 17, when her cruiser crashed into Edward Soistman’s vehicle.

Soistman, 91, died from the injuries sustained in the crash.

Miller, 28, who received minor injuries, was responding to a call for assistance from another deputy of a possible car theft when the accident occurred.

FHP is continuing with their investigation.  The Sheriff’s Office is also conducting an internal investigation of the crash.

Miller could likely face charges.
