Poll: Billionaire Greene Likely to Suffer Major Defeat

A newly released poll by Public Policy Polling (PPP) shows Rep. Kendrick Meek taking a broad lead with 51% to Jeff Greene’s 27% in the race for U.S. Senate and Democratic primary election on Tuesday.

Meek’s 70% to Greene’s 9% lead with African American’s no doubt is a key contributor of his success, but according to the poll, he’s also up 47% (Meek) to  37%  (Greene) with white voters.

The poll also revealed that Floridians have a 28% favorable to 47% unfavorable opinion of Greene, with 25% “not sure”.

For Meek, 50% say they have a favorable opinion, while 24% view him unfavorably and 26% say they are “not sure”.

However, Meek’s likely victory over Greene could very well be short lived. The 57% of Democratic primary voters who approve of Charlie Crist’s work as Governor exceeds the 50% who have a favorable opinion of Meek.  Undoubtedly, should Meek beat Greene in the primary, he faces a very difficult road in the General election.

With defeat likely looming for Greene, Floridians could also be sending a clear message that the ability to make huge amounts of money betting against the collapse of the housing market, does not translate into making a great political leader.    Also, voters might well be indicating that elections cannot be bought with the millions of dollars that have powered the Greene campaign.

The PPP surveyed 324 likely Democratic primary voters on August 21 and 22nd and has a margin of error of +/-5.4 percent.
