Scott Links McCollum to Greer in New Ad (Video)

Republican gubernatorial candidate Rick Scott explicitly tied his opponent, Attorney General Bill McCollum, to indicted former Republican Party of Florida Chairman, Jim Greer in a tough new ad released Tuesday.

“Party boss Jim Greer. Arrested for money laundering,” a narrator says over ominous music. “And who backed Jim Greer’s effort to hide financial irregularities? Bill McCollum.  As investigators closed in, McCollum said Greer’s financial records should be kept secret, not open to the public.”

Greer, who faces an Oct. 18 trial date in Orange County, and up to 75 years in prison if convicted, is accused of funneling party money to himself by hiring his own company as a fundraising consultant for the party.

Scott’s ad features footage of Greer introducing McCollum at an early campaign event. The ad also criticizes comments made to a group of newspaper editors earlier this summer about the difficulties the state’s open records laws can impose on the legislative process.

“Now McCollum says ‘I’m not sure the Legislature is the place for open government,’” he said. “He says ‘secrecy makes it easier to do deals.’  Bill McCollum, he wants to keep it all a secret.”
