Bill Segal and Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer will be behind the counter of an Orlando coffee shop Wednesday afternoon to promote “Buy Local Orlando,” a program that boosts the economy by encouraging citizens to shop at locally owned stores. Bill Segal will also announce his plan to expand the program throughout Orange County.

Why: Economic analysis shows that for every $100 a person spends at a locally owned business, $45 goes back into the community. When that same $100 is spent at a business that is not based in Orange County, only $13 is returned to our economy
The City of Orlando launched a “Buy Local” program with great success. The city has seen more than 500 businesses register to take part in the program since it launched a year ago. Once registered, the businesses get marketing assistance and have their business name mentioned in email blasts. The businesses also have opportunities to take part in networking events.
Citizens interested in supporting the “Buy Local” program can sign up for a free card that will provide them discounts at the registered stores. This card helps bring new customers to our small businesses.
By charging a small fee to registered businesses, Orange County can run this program at no cost to taxpayers.
