Orlando Jobless Rate Edges Up

The unemployment rate (not seasonally adjusted) in the Orlando Metropolitan Statistical Area (Lake, Orange, Osceola and Seminole) for June 2010 is 11.4 percent, up by 0.3 percent from the May rate of 11.1 percent, the Agency for Workforce Innovation (AWI) said in a release on Friday.  The increase in the June jobless rate mirrors the 11.4 percent reported in April 2010, and reflects, in part, the winding down of census workers’ jobs.

In the Orlando Metro area, there were 128,369 unemployed residents out of a labor force of 1.1 million. In June 2010, 5,477 less people were employed as compared with June 2009.

For Orange County alone, 69,265 persons were without work out of a labor force of 607,271, as of June 2010 and 4,722 more are unemployed, when compared to one year ago.

In Osceola County, the unemployment rate stood at 12.1 percent in June 2010, unchanged from the month before, but 1.0 percent higher than one year ago.  Lake County recorded a jobless rate of 11.9 percent, an increase of 0.2 percent from May 2010 and 0.8 percent higher than June 2009.  Brevard County posted a 11.4 percent unemployment rate in June, up from 11.0 percent the previous month and up 0.9 percent than one year ago.  The unemployment rate in Seminole County was 10.7 percent, up from the 10.4 percent in May 2010 and from the 10.1 percent in June 2009.

Meanwhile, Florida’s unemployment rate (seasonally adjusted) for June 2010 declined to 11.4 percent, down by 0.3 percentage points from the May rate of 11.7 percent. This is the third consecutive monthly decline in the state’s unemployment rate and the lowest rate since October 2009, the AWI said.  This said, the June 2010 figures mean that a little over 1 million people cannot find jobs out of a labor force of 9.2 million.

The US Department of Labor-Bureau of Labor Statistics said earlier this month that both the number of unemployed persons nationwide, 14.6 million and the unemployment rate of 9.5 percent edged down in June 2010.
