OCSO: No Assault Charges for Former Clermont Cop

Orange County Sheriff’s deputies have said that the victim/primary witness in this investigation can not positively identify his assailant and because Matthew Schafer has made himself fully available to detectives and cooperated with their investigation, he is no longer considered to be the prime suspect in the aggravated assault investigation, nor is there probable cause to pursue charges against him.

A former Clermont police officer is now being questioned by Orange County Sheriff’s deputies for assaulting a resident at the Vizcaya Lake Apartment last Friday.  An agency wide all-points bulletin had been issued, but the Orange County Sheriff’s Office said on Thursday that, the former police officer has been located and is cooperating with Sheriff’s detectives.

According to OCSO:

Matthew Schafer, a former Clermont police officer was alleged to have assaulted a resident of the Vizcaya Lake Apartments in Ocoee on June 18.  The resident told deputies he encounter a man, believed to be Schafer, who assaulted him with a handgun and threatened to kill him.   The resident was injured, but not threatened an eyewitness told detectives.  It is believed that, Schafer fired one round into the air from a small caliber revolver.

A statement on Thursday morning from the Sheriff’s Office said that Schafer was located and has been cooperating with detectives in their investigation into the incident.
