The Orlando Magic and Orange County hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony at the South Econlockhatchee Community Gym (3850 South Econlockhatchee Trail, Orlando, 32829) on Friday morning. Orange County Mayor Rich Crotty, Orange County Commissioners Bill Segal, Scott Boyd and Fred Brummer, along with Magic Chief Operating Officer Alex Martins and Magic Community Ambassador Bo Outlaw were on all hand for the first recreation center dedication.
The South Econ gym broke ground on June 29, 2009 and will be the first of five community gymnasiums which are being donated and built by the Orlando Magic. Orange County will operate the centers.
Within each 25,000-plus square foot building is a gymnasium, cardio and weight rooms, a game room, and a divisible multi-purpose room which can be utilized for meetings, social functions or small group classes. The facilities also include locker-rooms, concession areas and office space for the operations staff. The gymnasium is the primary function space for each facility and can be utilized for both half and full court basketball as well as volleyball.
The Orange County Orlando Magic Recreation Centers are a design-build effort between Orlando Magic partners Turner Construction Company, SC Advisors and SchenkelShultz Architecture.
Construction continues on the other four gyms. In order of construction:
