Governor Charlie Crist signed on Thursday a bill that would set uniform standards for those drivers caught running a red light.
Known as the Mark Wandall Traffic Safety Act, the legislation sets for the first time, uniform standards for the use of cameras as traffic enforcement devices across the state and brings to an end a nearly decade-long effort.
In signing the measure into law, Crist in a written statement said that he was “pleased to sign a bill that will save the lives of Floridians.” He added, “The legislation provides law enforcement with another effective tool to enforce safe and responsible driving on our roads.”
The bill was named after Mark Wandall who was killed by a red-light runner in 2003.
Drivers who are caught on camera running a red light will now be fined $158.00, across the state. A portion of the funds from traffic violations will go to the Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Trust Fund and the Department of Health Administrative Trust Fund, which supports trauma centers.
