Two people were killed early Friday morning in a crash on North Orange Blossom Trail and Pepper Mill Road. Investigators said a black two-door Toyota Scion was crushed when it overturned several times and crashed into a white Toyota Corolla that was going the opposite direction.
The Florida Highway patrol said the Scion was trying to change lanes when the driver lost control.
“Apparently, attempted to change lanes to either avoid another vehicle or react to another vehicle changing lanes,” said Sergeant Robert Blackwell of the Florida Highway Patrol.
The Scion flipped into the other side of traffic and landed on top of the Corolla. The back windshield was ripped off and when the Scion finally came to a rest, two people became trapped underneath it. Traffic homicide investigators were looking at speed as one factor that may have caused the driver of the black vehicle to lose control.
“Can you talk about speed?” asked a WFTV reporter Daralene Jones.
“That will be determined based on our investigation. I don’t want to go into how fast anyone was going yet,” responded Blackwell.
The driver of the Scion was identified as 21-year-old Vanessa Rodriguez. Two of her passengers, Christopher Vega, 25, and a 26-year-old male, whose name was not released, were both killed in the crash. A third passenger, Kenneth McGuire, 22, was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.
The driver of the Corolla, 46-year-old Francisco Sanchez, had minor injuries.
A stretch of OBT was closed for several hours Friday morning.
