Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings on Friday convened a meeting of his top deputies to discuss the agency’s proactive enforcement and education efforts, following two tourists corridor robberies that took place early Thursday morning. Also participating in the meeting were key representatives from the Orlando Police Department robbery units. Close collaboration with OPD and partnerships with the business community is essential for keeping the tourist corridor a safe destination for visitors.
On May 6th, around 12:26 am, when a black male suspect and a Hispanic male demanded money from a tourist in the Econolodge parking lot at 8373 International Drive. The victim was shot by one of the suspects and taken to a local hospital with non-live threatening injuries.
Also, on Thursday morning, around 12:48 am, a tourist was returning to his hotel at 8501 Palm Parkway, from a convenience store, when he was approached by a black male and a Hispanic man. The thugs produced a handgun and demanded money. The victim complied and the suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash.
