U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan has announced Dr. Phillips High School senior, Brooke Griffin, as a 2010 U.S. Presidential Scholar. She is one of only four seniors in Florida to receive this honor and only 141 students nationwide.
The award recognizes seniors who have demonstrated exceptional academic achievement, artistic excellence, leadership, citizenship, and service at school and in their community. Brooke was one of two students from Dr. Phillips High School who scored a perfect score on her SAT and ACT last year. After graduation, Brooke plans to attend Harvard. Among her extracurricular activities, Brooke plays the French horn and volunteers at Orlando Regional Medical Center and her local library.
Dr. Phillips High School principal Gene Trochinski said, “If every student was as smart and sweet as Brooke I would be blessed and my job would be a lot easier.”
Brooke will be honored for her accomplishment in Washington, D.C. next month. The U.S. Presidential Scholars are asked to invite their most inspiring and challenging teacher to travel to Washington, D.C. The educator selected receives a Teacher Recognition Award from the U.S. Department of Education and participates in the recognition events. The teacher chosen by Brooke is Robert Fedell, a language arts teacher at Dr. Phillips High School.
