Orlando to go Dark for Earth Hour 2010

On Saturday, March 27th from 8:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m., the City will be turning off all non-essential lights in City Hall in support of the Earth Hour 2010 campaign.  Earth Hour is a global event in which people across the world turn out their lights for one hour in support of action on climate change and to encourage creating a cleaner, safer and more secure future.

Notable U.S. landmarks such as Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, St. Louis’ Gateway Arch, Sea World in Orlando, the strip in Las Vegas, New York’s Empire State Building, the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Washington D.C.’s National Cathedral, California’s Santa Monica Pier and the Space Needle in Seattle are among the hundreds of sites that will turn off non-essential lighting for the hour, in what is expected to be the largest-ever call to action on climate change.

2010 marks the second year the City has participated in this global event, which attracted more than 80 million participants in the U.S. last year, and nearly a billion people around the world.

Citizens and businesses can join the City of Orlando and pledge their support by visiting cityoforlando.net/greenworks.

“I urge all citizens and businesses to join us in sending a strong message on climate change.” said Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer. “Together we can become a part of the solution.”

The City of Orlando’s participation in Earth Hour is part of Mayor Dyer’s Green Works Orlando initiative to protect our natural resources, encourage environmentally-friendly lifestyles and business practices and engage everyone who lives, works and visits Central Florida in the effort to “go green.”

“World Wildlife Fund is pleased that the City of Orlando is taking part in Earth Hour 2010,” said WWF President and CEO Carter Roberts. “We want the world to know that Americans care about saving the planet and stand united in seeking to find solutions to climate change.”
