Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Debbie Mucarsel-Powell is calling on election officials to extend Florida’s voter registration deadline due to the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene and the expected impact of Hurricane Milton as a major hurricane later this week.
In Florida, the deadline to register for 2024 General Election is today, October 7th. Find more information at the Florida Department of State’s online voter registration system.
“Floridians have only just begun to start rebuilding and recovering from the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene, but a new storm is already forecast to impact our state this week. Public safety has to be the priority, and Floridians shouldn’t have to choose between preparing for another storm and making sure their voice will be heard this November,” said Democrat Debbie Mucarsel-Powell. “Extreme weather impacts the homes we live in, our commutes to work and school, and our ability to pay everyday costs under the affordability crisis in our state. This widespread devastation severely limits Florida voters’ ability to register for the upcoming general election by the current October 7th deadline – whether online, in-person, or by mail. I am calling on Florida officials to extend the voter registration deadline to ensure we allow Floridians to exercise their rights at the ballot box.”
In addition to Mucarsel-Powell calling to extend Florida’s voter registration deadline, the Democratic Senate candidate also pointed voters to hurricane preparedness resources, including:
- Visit your local county emergency management office for up-to-date information on how to best prepare for the storm in your area and local emergency procedures.
- Visit Florida’s Division of Emergency Management for statewide updates, hurricane safety information, and hurricane recovery resources.
- Develop an evacuation plan in advance of an evacuation order being issued in your area.
