After her big primary victory, Florida Democrats celebrated Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, their U.S. Senate nominee who will challenge Republican Senator Rick Scott in November.
Democrat Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, the first South American immigrant to serve in Congress, won the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate in Florida. She was joined by Floridians of all backgrounds and partisan affiliations who have endured 14 years of Senator Rick Scott’s “extremism and are fired up to retire him.”
“Florida, thank you so much for this honor. For the last year, we have fought day in and day out to make the case for our campaign. This victory isn’t just mine – it belongs to so many who have stepped up to say that we deserve better here in Florida,” said Debbie Mucarsel-Powell. “From day one, this campaign has been about so much more than me. It’s about protecting our freedoms to make decisions about our own body, earn a good living off of one job, and retire with dignity. It’s about safeguarding our education, bringing good-paying jobs to Florida, and making sure our communities are safe from gun violence. This campaign is about who we really are here in Florida, and our fight is just getting started.”
Republican incumbent Senator Rick Scott also won his primary decisively, setting up the general election. Florida Democrats hope to seize momentum from the nomination of Kamala Harris, saying the Sunshine State is back in play, but Republicans are confident they will deliver the state for Donald Trump and Rick Scott.
Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried released a statement congratulating Debbie Mucarsel-Powell on becoming the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate.
“Debbie Mucarsel-Powell is a champion for working families and reproductive freedom, and Florida needs her voice in the Senate,” said FDP Chair Nikki Fried. “Florida Democrats are 100 percent behind her as our nominee to defeat Rick Scott and his self-serving agenda: banning abortion nationwide, ripping away seniors’ Social Security and Medicare, and raising taxes on the middle class while cutting taxes for corporations and the wealthy like himself. Florida Democrats are ready to get to work to elect Debbie Mucarsel-Powell and send Rick Scott packing once and for all.”
Florida Democrats celebrated Debbie Mucarsel-Powell while attacking Senator Rick Scott’s extreme, self-serving agenda, which they say includes his support for a national abortion ban and anti-choice legislation, his votes against access to contraception and IVF treatment, his signature plan to end Social Security and Medicare as voters know them, and what his political rivals call plans to raise taxes on the middle class while lowering taxes for corporations and the wealthy.
“My mother brought me to this country for the freedom and opportunities that our democracy provides,” Democrat Debbie Mucarsel-Powell said. “But extremist politicians like Rick Scott are robbing us of these very freedoms and opportunities. Rick Scott tried to end Social Security and Medicare as we know them, supports a national ban on abortion, and wants to raise taxes on the middle class. Let me be clear — I am running to represent every single Floridian in this state.
