Grand Prize Winners at Orange County Science Exposition

On February 15th, Rollins College hosted the 7th annual Dr. Nelson Ying Orange County Science Exposition at the Alfond Sports Center.  The event showcased science research from the best and brightest middle and high school students in the area.  Meet some of those winners below:

Michael Harding a senior of Lake Highland Preparatory School, took away the coveted first prize in biological sciences  with his project on “The Effects of Borderline Hypothyroidism on Quality of Life and Daytime Drowiness.”   Shannon Stockton, also of Lake Highland Preparatory School, came in second with “The Synergistic Effects of Tolfanemic Acid Radiation on 5PL and Survival in Head and Neck Cancer.”

Regarding team projects in biological sciences, seniors, Audrey Leasure and Gennifer Rubin, 11th graders at Lake Highland Preparatory walked away with the first prize for “Controlling Infrared Emissivity of Electroless Nick Boron coated Metal Alloy Saw Blades.”

Grand prize plaques were also awarded to Katherine O’Meara of Conway Middle School in the physical sciences category, junior section for her work on “The Effect of Modern Technology (LEDs) on the Cost of Using a Flashlight.”   Nicholas Hesley, a junior at Liberty Middle School took the top prize in the biological sciences category with his “Tortoise vs Brushfire” project.
