Wal-mart, the U.S retail giant, announced today, that it was firing some 11,000 employees.
The workers who are losing their jobs work at Sam’s Club, either conducting demonstrations or recruiting customers.
Wal-mart indicated that they are outsourcing the product sampling and demonstrations aspects of their business to Shopper Events and that the fired workers could re-apply for similar jobs.
Orlando Business Journal estimates that about 154 workers would lose their jobs in Central Florida.
Wal-mart will also be eliminating new business membership representative positions, amounting to two employees per store. This would impact some 14 workers, said the Orlando Business Journal.
These jobs cuts come at a time when the Agency for Workforce Innovation recently announced an unemployment rate of 11.9 percent in the Orlando metro area (Lake, Orange, Osceola and Seminole) or 131,000 persons jobless, in December 2009.
