Volusia County Co-Defendants Convicted of Deadly Shooting over Drugs

Two Volusia County co-defendants were convicted of a deadly shooting over drugs in Central Florida.

After a three-day trial this month, a Volusia County jury found defendant Toriano Brooks guilty as charged of Second-Degree Murder (Firearm). His co-defendant Isaiah Moore was found guilty of Manslaughter with a Firearm.

Immediately following the verdict, Brooks was sentenced to life in prison as a Prison Releasee Reoffender.

On the afternoon of June 20, 2021, a dead body was found near a drainage ditch in a wooded area near South State Road 415 and Lake Ashby Road in New Smyrna Beach. The victim had sustained four gunshot wounds.

The Volusia Sheriff’s Office investigation later revealed that the victim’s body was dumped from a vehicle after he was murdered.

“These defendants have no respect for the sanctity of human life. As soon as they killed the victim, they were flashing stacks of cash on social media,” State Attorney R.J. Larizza said about the defendants. “Brooks will now spend the rest of his life behind bars for the murder. We will also be seeking the maximum penalty for Moore.”

The case was investigated by lead Detective Steven Wheeler and other members of the Volusia Sheriff’s Office. Assistant State Attorneys Mark Interlicchio and Julie Ozburn successfully tried the case for the state. The Honorable Karen Foxman presided over the case and will pronounce Moore’s sentence at a later date. He faces up to 30 years in prison for the Manslaughter with a Firearm conviction.
