Progressives ‘Rally for Our Democracy’ in Orlando for Suspended State Attorney

Local progressives are planning to stand with State Attorney Monique Worrell with a “Rally for Our Democracy” at Orlando City Hall as they are “appalled by the ongoing targeted assault and undemocratic attack from Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.”

Governor DeSantis, a Republican, suspended Orange-Osceola State Attorney Worrell, a Democrat, for neglect of duty and incompetence.

The progressive group Florida Rising called the decision “both a foul and hypocritical political play entrenched in DeSantis’ commitment to anti-Blackness and a chemtrail of toxic policies and practices that perpetuate separatism and personal political ambitions.”

“As Floridians, time and time again we’re asked to compromise our rights and what we know to be ethically and legally correct,” affirmed Sheena Rolle, Florida Rising’s Senior Director of Strategy. “What DeSantis has decided to do (this time around) is a foul move that not only impacts specific counties and residents, but sustains the threat of tyranny and dismisses the electoral and judicial process. Our democracy is something we’re not willing to tolerate.”

The “Rally for Our Democracy” will take place on August 10th at 7pm at Orlando City Hall. The groups planning to rally in Orlando said they are confronting petty politics and white supremacist ideologies that target Black women in politics, and attempt to devalue their contributions to expanding and protecting U.S. democracy.

“Orange and Osceola Counties: the voices of the voters matter,” former U.S. Representative Val Demings posted about the rally. “Your voices matter. If you want to speak out against the governor’s attempt to overturn elections, there’s a rally tomorrow at City Hall.”

The progressive group Florida Rising is calling for Worrell to be reinstated immediately.

“As the largest independent political organization in the State of Florida, we demand the immediate reinstatement of State Attorney Monique Worrell,” Florida Rising stated. “Worrell is a devoted Champion; people-centered leader; and just so happens to be one of the only three elected Black State Attorneys in the entire history of Florida. She is not only committed to protecting the constitution and pushing back on abuse of power, but committed to the continuous and cemented fight towards equity and justice.”
