Assistance Funds for At-Home Safety Enhancements for Seniors Expiring Soon

Central Florida seniors have until June 30th to apply for up to $6,000 in assistance for essential tools, technology and home modifications that can allow them to age in place safely and with dignity.

The Enhanced Home Care for the Elderly (eHCE) program, which was created in partnership between the Florida Department of Elder Affairs and the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration, focuses on low-cost, high-impact interventions that create lasting benefits – especially for older adults who would otherwise be at risk of moving to an assisted living facility or nursing home.

Through the program, qualifying seniors are eligible for up to $6,000 to use for enhancements such as:

  • Home modifications, such as a no-slip ramp or shower grab bar
  • Fall detection or door-opening detection alerts
  • Medical monitoring devices that track vitals, blood pressure or glucose
  • Accessible smart home devices, such as vacuums, thermostats or doorbells
  • Other high-impact interventions that support independence

“The benefits of living in your own home as an older adult are well-documented by researchers,” said Karla Radka, President and CEO of Senior Resource Alliance (SRA), Central Florida’s Area Agency on Aging and the agency overseeing the distribution of eHCE funds. “But without the proper measures in place, living alone as a senior can pose a risk. The eHCE program is tailored to meet each eligible senior’s unique needs, empowering them to age safely and independently in the comfort of their own home.”

To be eligible for the eHCE program, an adult must be 60 years old or older and either be enrolled in Florida Medicaid or be at risk of nursing home placement. Assessment and services are provided through reputable local organizations in partnership with SRA: Aging Matters in Brevard County, the Osceola Council on Aging in Osceola County and the Brevard Alzheimer’s Foundation (BAFI) for Seminole and Orange Counties.
