Local Orlando Hospital Using AI For Colon Cancer Screenings

Spotting polyps during a routine colonoscopy can be a bit like “hide and seek.” Polyps can be extremely small or tucked under folds in the colon’s lining, making them difficult to detect. With early detection being crucial to preventing colorectal cancer, the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the US, doctors finally have a second set of eyes to help spot these well-hidden polyps and save lives.

The Center for Digestive Endoscopy – Orlando now offers patients enhanced cancer screenings with the aid of artificial intelligence (AI). GI Genius, the first and only computer aided detection (CADe) system using AI to identify colorectal polyps during colonoscopies and has demonstrated a 30% increase in detecting precancerous lesions compared to colonoscopies alone.

Cleared in April by the FDA, GI Genius is a scope that attaches to any endoscopy tower that a doctor already uses to perform a colonoscopy and highlights potential polyps in real time (here’s a video to show you how it works). The AI has a 99.7% sensitivity rate and has demonstrated a 30% increase in detecting precancerous lesions compared to colonoscopies alone. While this new technology is not meant to replace the expertise of a gastroenterologist, the goal is for it to act as a “second set of eyes” in the mission to eliminate colorectal cancer.
