On Friday, Orange County Sheriff’s deputies announced that a suspect in the armed robbery and kidnapping of a federal law enforcement agent has been taken into custody.
Dante Askins, 18, was arrested on Thursday night in a stolen car on International Drive & Hawaiian Court.
“We have successfully identified one subject who participated in the crime and arrested him last night in a stolen car along I-Drive & Hawaiian Court,” a statement from the Sheriff’s Office said. “We are working to apprehend the other outstanding suspects.”
The law enforcement agent’s ordeal began early on Thursday at a hotel on Universal Boulevard, as he packed his car in preparation for a morning trip, according to deputies.
The agent, 44, who has not been named, was forced into his car by four men at gunpoint and made to drive them around, deputies also said.
The agent was pistol whipped and robbed. The attack left the agent requiring several stitches to his head. His wife, realizing that he had gone for too long a period of time and called 911.
With the help of On Star, deputies were able to locate the agent. His car was ditched and found near Cypress Parkway, about 10 miles from the hotel.
Askins has been charged with armed robbery, armed carjacking and aggravated battery.
