Description: Come and experience the Real Florida frontier at Fort Foster Historic Site. Fort Foster was one of the original Seminole War forts constructed in Florida during the early 1800s. Today a replica wood picket style fort has been constructed on the original site. Park Rangers and reinactors provide tours, and explain the Fort operations and living conditions, as well as telling the history of the Seminole Wars in Florida. Description: In November, the Southwest Florida Water Management District will celebrate the Hillsborough River and the Hillsborough River watershed with a series of events along the river. In conjunction with this awareness month, several events are planned within the Hillsborough River watershed to create watershed awareness, showcase the commitment to protecting the watershed and foster proper stewardship of this important resource. Hillsborough River State Park and Keep Hillsborough County Beautiful are in partnership for an in-park river clean up program on this date. Keep Hillsborough County Beautiful tries to help solve the problems of litter. People are the problem, but people are also the solution. Marine debris is one pollution problem that society can solve with action. The cleanup is about individual solutions to a global problem. * MOONLIGHT KAYAK TOUR
Lovers Key State Park
Date: November 2nd, 2009 – 5:00p.m.—8:00p.m.
Description: Join park naturalist Terri Krass for a kayak adventure under the full moon. This two-hour paddle through the estuary and back bays will allow paddlers to enjoy the sights and sounds of the park not experienced by other visitors. Paddlers will enjoy the sunset and observe the creatures that come to life on a barrier island at night. Participants may bring their own kayaks or rent one from the park (see fee schedule above). Rented kayaks will include life vest and paddle. A short safety demonstration will be held for all paddlers prior to launch. Bring a headlamp, water, bug spray, and a long sleeved shirt. Be prepared to get splashed and wear appropriate water shoes. Limited to 15 participants.
Fees: $25 (for those supplying own paddlecraft) – $55 (includes rental of a single kayak) – $70 (includes rental of a tandem kayak).

Description: Win cash and see the park from the water in this Salt Springs Alliance sponsored event. The launch location 9120 Old Post Road in Port Richey, please plan to get there early to allow time for everyone to launch by 9am. Directions: The park is located in the Port Richey area of Pasco County. At this time only a start-up kit consisting of a small self-composting restroom, small picnic shelter, information kiosk, and one half mile of nature trail is available to the public from the landward side. It can be reached by turning west off of Cinema Drive and it is approximatley two tenths of a mile to the park entrance. Cinema Drive dead ends at entrance of start-up kit. The main use area of the park is scheduled to begin construction sometime after the first of the new year. That entrance will be just north of Ridge Road in Port Richey.

* 11TH ANNUAL DISCOVER THE ISLAND!
Egmont Key State Park

Description: Discover The Island is quickly approaching! The 11th Annual event is hosted by the Egmont Key Alliance and more than 50 volunteers work hundreds of hours on this event. Guided tours are scheduled both days, featuring living history on, beach dynamics, nature, cultural and the military. Shuttle boats transport visitors from Ft. DeSoto Park hourly, starting at 9am.
This is the Egmont Key Alliance’s major fund raising event, to support Egmont Key State Park.

Hillsborough River State Park
Date: Nov. 14-15, 2009 1:00 PM (2 Day Training/Primitive Camping Area/Overnight Program)
Description: Front Country Program – Meet at the recreation hall at parking lot # 3 at 1:00 pm.
Adults (18+). This course takes place in and around the Hillsborough River State Park. There will be a 2 mile backpack into the primitive camping area, at which point classes will be held. Note: Participants will need to provide their own camping equipment.
This is a course designed for outdoor educators, youth leaders, agency employees and others who value the land and want to teach others how to protect it. Graduates will receive a Leave No Trace certificate and become registered as Trainers with the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics (www.lnt.org). This course is hands on and very much a participatory outing. Prerequisites include: proficiency in outdoor living skills and preparation with proper outdoor living equipment and food. Through focused activities, hands-on field experience and both formal and informal discussions, you will be introduced to concepts and methods that will advance your knowledge of Leave No Trace issues, expand your repertoire of low-impact skills and increase your effectiveness in teaching these important skills to others. This is a fun course where all participants have a part in demonstrating the choices that can be made to minimize our impact on the land and our resources. * CIGAR HERITAGE FESTIVAL AT THE YBOR CITY
Ybor City Museum State Park
Date: November 21, 2009 – 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Description: Come join the fun and ambiance of Ybor City for a day of activities celebrating the rich cigar heritage that once made Tampa the ‘Cigar Capital of the World.’ Centennial Park, located directly in front of the museum, will host a variety of vendors, authentic food, cigar rolling, live music & entertainment throughout the day including Cigar Dave broadcast, game zone featuring NCAA football & more. Proceeds and donations from the event benefit the Ybor City Museum Society. See master cigar makers Wallace and Margarita Reyes attempt to break the record for ‘World’s Longest Cigar.’
Visit the museum to experience a glimpse into the lives of the immigrants who settled, lived in, and built the thriving community of Ybor City. Visit “La Casita” and travel back in time to see how workers lived in 1895.
The museum garden will offer children’s activities and light refreshments.

Parking – Parking is available on the street at the parking meters (quarters only) or at one of the metered lots located off of 8th Avenue or one of the Parking Garages. Directions: The park is located in the Port Richey area of Pasco County. At this time only a start-up kit consisting of a small self-composting restroom, small picnic shelter, information kiosk, and one half mile of nature trail is available to the public from the landward side. It can be reached by turning west off of Cinema Drive and it is approximatley two tenths of a mile to the park entrance. Cinema Drive dead ends at entrance of start-up kit. The main use area of the park is scheduled to begin construction sometime after the first of the new year. That entrance will be just north of Ridge Road in Port Richey.

Ybor City Museum State Park

Description: Ring in the holiday season by visiting the Ybor City Museum State Park for Santa Fest 2009. Although many activities will be ongoing throughout the district, the museum garden will be hosting Santa himself, live music and games. Sponsored by the City of Tampa Parks and Recreation Department, this community event includes $0.25 street car rides, giant snow slide, Tampa Bay Rays batting cage, and much more. Bring the whole family for an entire day of activities. The festival will conclude with a holiday parade.

Description: The United Daughters of the Confederacy, Florida Division, the Gamble Plantation Preservation Alliance and the Florida Park Service proudly announce the Plantation Christmas Open House at Gamble Plantation Historic State Park in Ellenton, Florida.
Once again you can travel back to the Old South during the day through the many lifestyle demonstrations of that time period. Gamble Mansion and the Patten House will be lavishly decorated in the Christmas spirit, allowing you a special look at a 19th century Christmas. The Ladies of the United Daughters of the Confederacy will be wearing costumes reminiscent of the era of the 1840’s through 1870’s to add that special touch of authenticity to the day. The 4th Florida Volunteer Infantry will be dressed in military uniforms re-enacting a Confederate encampment. There will be music, crafts and fun for everyone.

Dade Battlefield Historic State Park

* 2010 CARRIAGE MOBSTACLE
Alafia River State Park
Date: January 17, 2010. Registration begins at 9:00 a.m. Last Carriage Out – 10:30 a.m.
Description: This horse and carriage event consists of man made and natural obstacles, testing your ability to correctly navigate a mapped course while communicating with your animal. The leisure paced course is timed but it is not a race. Drivers coming closest to the Secret Time are the winners. Prizes will be awarded. Drivers will be able to select course length – short pleasure drive – 3 to 4 miles or a longer pleasure drive of 7 to 9 miles. The grassy trails are ideal for all types of vehicles and provided good footing for any size equine. Outriders are welcome to ride along with the carriages, but prizes will be limited to horse and cart participants. Participants must supply their own horse and have proof of a current negative coggins test. Description: Learn to capture the best wildlife shots, land and seascapes, and make even plant photos exciting! Joe Moran, an instructor with the Fort Myers Camera Club, and a nature photographer for 30 years, will lead the workshop. The workshop will include a traverse through Lovers Key State Park to explore some of the most photogenic areas of Southwest Florida’s natural coastline and photograph the wildlife that Lovers Key is known for. Participants should bring their own digital camera, camera manuals, hat, sunscreen and bug spray. Limited to 15 participants.

Fort Foster State Historic Site
Date: Thursday, February 11th, – Sunday, February 14th, 2010- 10 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Description: The Hillsborough River State Park will present its Annual Event at the Fort Foster State Historic Site. This event is a living history reenactment featuring military, Seminole, and civilian reenactors, sutlers, traders, and craft demonstrations. School Days- Thursday 2/11/10 and Friday 2/12/10. Admission is a $2.00 donation per student – ‘scholarships’ may be available for home school students and for classes of students from area schools (Teachers/Chaperones are Free). Registration forms are available on-line or by calling (813) 987-6870 . The general public is also welcome on the 2/11/10 and 2/12/10. Refreshments will be available for visitors’ enjoyment. On Saturday 2/13/ 10 and Sunday 2/14/10 there will be skirmishes after 1:00 pm, as the reenactor Seminoles try to burn the bridge and the reenactor soldiers defend it. The Fort Foster State Historic Site is located adjacent to Hillsborough River State Park on U.S. 301 North, 9 miles north of Fowler Avenue and 6 miles south of Zephyrhills. No pets, alchohol, smoking, or coolers allowed in festival area. Hosted by the Friends of Collier Seminole State Park. 100% of proceeds benefit the park. Follow 41 for about 15 miles, and the Collier-Seminole State Park will be on your left.

* A SPECIAL VALENTINES DAY EVENT!
Lovers Key State Park
Date: February 14th, 2010 – 4:30p.m.—7:00p.m. Pre-registration required by February 5th, 2010.
Description: Love is always in the air at Lovers Key, but even more so on Valentines Day! Couples are invited to come to the park for a special vow renewal ceremony at the gazebo on the beach. Each couple will receive a photo taken at sunset. Champagne and sweet treats will be served to music as everyone enjoys the sunset and quiet walk on the beach. Pre-registration will be required by February 5, 2010, so that all couples will be entered into a drawing for a FREE VALENTINE’S NIGHT STAY at LOVERS KEY RESORT (www.loverskey.com). The drawing will be held on February 6th so that the winning couple can make plans to spend the night at this fabulous full-facility resort. Limited to 25 couples.

Description: The historic settlement will be alive with all kinds of antique engines, tractors, cars and machinery on display. Our 1926 Fairbanks Morse engine will be started on the hour each day.

Hillsborough River State Park
Date: March 23 through March 27, 2010 8am until 4pm.
Description: Wood carving classes will be held Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Non carving companions and visitors are welcome at anytime during the Roundup. For those wanting to give woodcarving a try, a ‘Fundamentals of Woodcarving’ class is offered on Tuesday through Saturday, tools and materials are available with the class. * ECHO ECO QUEST
Alafia River State Park
Date: Saturday – March 27, 2010. 8:00 am – Noon
Description: Comprised of two adventure races: one for the dire hard adventure racer and one for the weekend warrior. In addition, we also have a nature walk. To enter into the race, participants are requested to obtain sponsors and donations to cover their minimum entrance fee. They are encouraged to raise more. The top three money raisers get the honor of wearing the yellow jersey the day of the event. Food, music, and fun to follow after the event.
ECHO, the Emergency Care Help Organization, provides food and clothing to residents of Eastern Hillsborough County that have experienced a recent emergency. Established in 1987, ECHO has served over 100,000 individuals.
Everyone who attempts any of the challenges will receive an event t-shirt, participant goodie bag, event poster, free breakfast and lunch!

At exit #246, turn Right (East) onto Big Bend Road. Keep straight on Big Bend Road for approximately 1 mile. Turn Right (South) onto U.S. 301. Keep straight on U.S. 301 for approximately 1.5 miles. Turn Left (East) onto CR 672. Follow CR 672 for approximately 12 miles. Turn Left (North) onto CR 39. Keep straight on CR 39 for approximately 1.5 miles. The main park entrance in on the Right side. From the East – Take I-4 West to exit #22. Turn Left onto Park Road. Follow Park Road for approximately 2.5 miles. Bear right onto 39B. Turn Left onto SR 39 (James Redman Parkway). Continue on SR/CR 39 for approximately 15.2 miles. The main park entrance will be on the Left side.

* ANNUAL WORLD WAR II DAY
Dade Battlefield Historic State Park
Date: First Saturday in August – each year.
Description: World War II Day is held on the first Saturday in August each year. This event recognizes our veterans and thanks them for their service to our country. The program features numerous displays of vintage military vehicles, equipment, and weapons from all of the various countries involved in World War II and some of the more modern wars up through Viet Nam. There are also reenactors from Rosy the Riveter to the Royal Air Force. Also, the Bushnell USO Canteen will be open.
