Property insurer FM Global awarded a grant worth more than $3,000 to Orange County Public Schools to teach students about fire prevention and safety. Prekindergarten and kindergarten students are targeted for the message to be delivered in the fire safety materials the district will purchase with the grant.
Resham Adhikari, Engineering Specialist for FM Global, presented the grant to OCPS Fire Marshal Charles Anderson in Mrs. Heidi McClure’s kindergarten classroom at Citrus Elementary School in Ocoee today. Students created firefighter helmets and recited the rules of fire safety. City of Ocoee firefighters also attended and showed children how a fire truck works.
The week of October 4 through October 10 is National Fire Prevention Week declared by the National Fire Protection Association. This year’s theme is “Stay Fire Smart! Don’t Get Burned.”
Fire Marshal Anderson said, “With the money from FM Global, we will be able to teach many of our youngest students how to prevent fires, what to do if they see one and how to escape safely.”
“We believe the majority of property damage is preventable—not inevitable—and we are pleased to make funding available to organizations, like Orange County Public Schools, that share the same philosophy,” said Michael Spaziani, manager of FM Global’s Fire Prevention Grant Program. “After all, it’s much better to prevent a disaster than to recover from one.”
