An unidentified aviation company will receive state economic incentives to the tune of $20.8 million, following approval by a special Florida legislative commission on Tuesday.
Known only as “Project Magellan,” the aviation company is expected to bring 1,800 jobs to Melbourne International Airport paying an average of $100,000 a year, according to news reports.
Project Magellan is expected to entail a package of incentives from the state, including Enterprise Florida and Space Florida. The city of Melbourne, Melbourne International Airport and the Economic Development Commission of Florida’s Space Coast also are expected to play roles in putting together an incentive package, floridatoday.com reported.
The name of the firm has not been disclosed.
Some Floridians objected to the secrecy surrounding the failure to identify the firm, saying it runs counter to tenets of transparency and open government.
