Freshman Rep. Trey Radel (R-FL), who pleaded guilty to cocaine possession in October, will resign from Congress today.

Radel resignation was confirmed Monday by his chief of staff Dave Natonski, according to news reports.

Radel, 37, was arrested on Oct. 29 and charged with cocaine possession in Washington, D.C., after he was caught trying to buy cocaine from an undercover officer.  He subsequently checked himself into a rehab center for treatment.

Over the last few months there were increasing calls by the GOP for Radel to resign, but he vowed to “rebuild and regain” the trust he had lost with constituents and colleagues.

Radel represented the heavily Republican southwest Florida district which stretches from Fort Myers to Naples.

A special election would likely take place in late June or early July, according to news reports.
