A woman is behind bars, accused of striking and killing a teenager in a cross walk on Orange County’s east side and speeding away.

Jennifer Lee Herrington, 51, of Winter Park, is believed to have struck Omar Figueroa, 13, of Orlando, who was attempting to cross State Road 436, in a marked cross walk, Florida Highway Patrol said.

Witnesses say, Herrington was traveling northbound on State Road 436 near Old Cheney Highway around 7:30 p.m., on Sunday, and ran a red light. The front of the 2002 Chevy Malibu she was driving struck Omar, who was thrown from the impact.

Herrington then sped away, but as she approached Baldwin Park Street, she struck the rear of another car traveling northbound that was stopped for the red light.

According to reports, even before Herrington crashed her vehicle, she was being pursued by an alert motorist who had observed her speed away.

Omar Figueroa was pronounced dead at the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children.

Herrington, who suffered minor injuries, was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death.  She was booked into the Orange County Jail early on Monday morning on a $10,000 bond.  Troopers said, other traffic charges are pending.

Toxicology results are being awaited to determine whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.

The investigation is ongoing.
