FHP: Two people killed in separate crashes

Fatal-Crash-generic-27825957-480-x-270A pedestrian was struck and killed on State Road 436, Sunday night, Florida Highway Patrol said.

Daniel Belt, 59, of Orlando was attempting to cross State Road 436 near Aloma Avenue, not in a crosswalk, when he was hit by a 1999 GMC van heading southbound, on the inside through lane.

Gary Price, 72, of Winter Park, who was driving the van, was unable to avoid hitting Belt, troopers said. Belt died at the Orlando Regional Medical Center.

The crash remains under investigation.

And in a separate crash, the driver of a Toyota Prius, James Maddux, 30, of Orlando, died yesterday from injuries he sustained on September 25, Florida Highway Patrol said.

Maddux was traveling southbound on Orange Blossom Trail, approaching the intersection, when he ran a red light and struck the left side of a vehicle, heading eastbound on Southland Boulevard. Terris Byrd, 34, of Maitland, was the driver of that vehicle, a 2001 Mercury-4 door.

Both Maddux and Byrd were ejected from their vehicles and the Prius caught on fire after the initial impact, troopers said.

Maddux had earlier fled from a trooper who attempted to conduct a traffic stop for suspicion of DUI on Orange Blossom Trail and Duskin Avenue, troopers also said.

Zachary Poirrier, 18, a passenger traveling with Maddux suffered serious injuries. Richard Jarvis, 31, who was traveling with Byrd, also sustained serious injuries and was taken to the Orlando Regional Medical Center.
