Florida’s Dirty Little Secret: Consulate Health to be exposed

On Tuesday, October 22, 2013, 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East Florida (1199SEU Florida) will host a press teleconference to release a study that examines Consulate Health Care’s track record of below-average care at many of the company’s nursing homes.

Data in the study reveals that despite Florida’s nursing home industry receiving a “B”, the state has a secret that many do not know. For instance, nursing home sanctions in Florida are at the highest levels in recent history, with one in five nursing homes on the state’s watch list, and that is not because they are leading by example. Florida’s largest nursing home provider, Consulate Health Care, has thirty-six percent of its nursing homes on Florida’s watch list “for not meeting state standards, or for not making corrections quickly enough.” Consulate was recently named one of the fastest growing private firms in the Orlando area for 2013 by the Orlando Business Journal. The study recommends Florida’s legislature address the growing trend of prioritizing profits over patients, as exemplified by Consulate Health Care’s shaky record.
