Ocoee police are searching for three armed suspects who robbed a home on Hopewell Drive Wednesday night and fled their getaway vehicle after it crashed near the overpass at McCormick Road.
Detectives say, the driver of a red Chevy, 27-year-old Bennie Hardwick was injured in the crash and was unable to flee the scene. He has been charged with home invasion robbery with a firearm.
Hardwick and three other armed and masked suspects rang the doorbell at the home on Hopewell Drive just before 11:30 p.m., and forced their way inside. The suspects robbed the victims of electronics and jewelry then fled in the Chevy.
Investigators say, Hardwick drove north in the southbound lanes of State Road 429 toward Apopka and crashed near the overpass at McCormick Road, after striking a concrete barrier. Large pieces of concrete were scattered onto the roadway below and the car caught fire.
Three suspects fled except Hardwick who was injured in the crash.
Police found several items from the home invasion on Hardwick and in the crashed car. He was taken into custody and charged with home invasion robbery with a firearm.
