A child died at the Orange Lake Resort near Orlando on Wednesday and efforts are continuing to determine what led to her death.
11-year-old Ashton Jojo who was visiting from New York with her family, was playing in the putt put golf area inside the resort when, her golf ball fell into a small pond nearby, Orange County deputies said.
Ashton was attempting to retrieve the ball from the pond when, she screamed as if in distress. A guest nearby in the golf area attempted to rescue her but failed, as he suffered an injury as well.
Orange County Fire Rescue officials, called to the resort around 2:00 p.m., attempted rescue efforts and transported Ashton to Celebration Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
Ashton had just celebrated her 11th birthday on June 22.
Authorities said, Ashton’s cause of death is still under investigation.
The Orange Lake Resort is located at 8505 West Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway in Kissimmee.
