Cell phone use leads to deadly shooting in Pasco County theatre

police_tapeA shooting in a theatre in Pasco County on Monday afternoon, left one man dead and another person injured.

The shooting happened at The Grove 16 Theatre located at 6333 Wesley Grove Boulevard in Wesley Chapel, just before 1:30 p.m.

Investigators say, the shooting resulted from an altercation that began over the use of a cell phone by Chad Oulson, the victim.

Police say, Curtis Reeves, a retired Tampa Police Officer and his wife, were sitting behind Oulson and his wife Nichole Oulson.

Reeves had asked Oulson, who was using his phone during the previews, to stop several times and had even left the theatre briefly. Oulson asked Reeves if he had reported him to the theatre management and that’s when a verbal altercation ensued.

Reeves pulled out a handgun shooting Oulson in the chest.  Oulson’s wife, Nichole, placed a hand over her husband’s chest and received an injury to her hand from the shot.

Both Oulsons were airlifted to Tampa General Hospital, where Chad Oulson was pronounced dead.  His wife was being treated for her hand injury.

Pasco County deputies said, a “good Samaritan” helped detain Reeves, who has been charged with second degree murder. Reeves is a retired Tampa Police Office.

Deputies do not believe that the couples were known to each other.

About 25 patrons were about to watch the movie, Lone Survivor, when the shooting erupted.
