Gov. Crist requests federal disaster declaration for flooded N. Florida

By Paul Flemming

Florida Capital Bureau

Crist’s letter to President Barack Obama, seeks public assistance for 11 counties — Bay, Calhoun, Gulf, Holmes, Jackson, Jefferson, Liberty, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, Walton and Washington — and mitigation-grant assistance for the whole state. The letter indicates further county designations and requests for assistance will be sought in future and floodwaters continue to rise on the Suwannee River.

Crist’s letter notes severe weather that began March 26 with heavy rains, severe storms and tornadoes that dropped more than 10 inches of rain on some parts of the Panhandle.
