Beatdown In The Making or Why Regina Hill Could Prevail in District 5

Daisy Lynum is in trouble.

There’s a beatdown in the making.

Call it a good old-fashioned Florida ass-whuppin, or what have you, but for the first time in years, District 5 Commissioner Daisy Lynum is facing a real challenge as the reigning Queen of Parramore.

And it’s Regina Hill throwing the punches.

Yes, that Regina Hill. The one vilified and castigated by local media for her youthful indiscretions. The Regina Hill that even the West Orlando News called out, has found her way into the hearts of would be District 5 voters.

The underdog, Regina turns out to have a real weapon: honesty and fearlessness. She has brilliantly turned her past into an asset that residents in District 5 can identify with.

And, she can win.

Winning the support of District 5 voters by reminding them that she is from them and of them, is a weapon that Daisy Lynum can’t get her hands on. This makes Hill dangerous. And formidable.

What’s amazing here is that despite local media coverage of her past troubles with the law, chronicling her errors in judgement, Ms. Hill has used this to connect with voters in the district a way that no one could have anticipated.

What they see in Ms. Hill is a little of themselves, perhaps. After all, her gutsy response to the negative press coverage has only galvanized their support, motivating them to rally around her. And who can blame them?

We have all made mistakes in our past. No one reading this can say they are proud of every decision they’ve ever made. But, how many of us can say they could endure the negative scrutiny that Regina Hill has endured?

Any takers?

I didn’t think so.

Most political candidates would run and hide from such negative stories. Not Regina. Instead, she has decided to face her past, own it and move on.

Without a crystal ball, its hard to predict the outcome of the upcoming April election, but the sentiments on Parramore appear to lean favorably toward a Hill victory.

Or, should we say knockout?

  1. Definitely rooting for Regina Hill! 18 years in office and District 5 has seen no progress, all while the City continuously take land in Parramore for pennies and Commissioner Lynum sits idle. Now they are condemning a church to build a soccer stadium in a community where none of the residents play soccer or are soccer fans. This would not happen in any other district in Orlando, but it happens in district 5 because there is no one there looking out for the residents of district 5! WIN REGINA WIN!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Regina! Remind us of John 8:7! “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone….” You represent the change that the community needs and will follow. Continue to be a Phoenix and the community will rise with you.

  3. […] Hill, who has had a troubled past, was obviously able to connect better with voters in District 5.  She campaigned on jobs, fighting for the homeless, affordable housing and securing adequate resources for the people in the District.  Hill also characterized her campaign as a movement and vowed to shake up the system, which she has clearly done.  New to elected office, time will tell how effective she will be in representing her constituents.
